The PCB is complete after the hole drilling, circuit testing, and chemical cleaning processes have been performed. The process mentioned above is only for single side printed circuit boards-the entire process may be duplicated or repeated at various stages when manufacturing double-sided or multi-layer PCB applications.
Screen Printing Process Screen printing printed circuit boards is typically performed in a clean, dust-free room using semi-automatic or fully-automatic screen printing presses. The most common PCB panel size is 53 x 72 cm, with the printing area around 50 x 70 cm. The printed panel may contain many PCB panels that are printed at once, and will eventually be separated.
Screens are stretched with precision, stable polyester meshes like SEFAR PME and SEFAR PET 1500, two meshes specifically engineered by Sefar for competitive electronic printing. Solvent and/or UV pastes are used for printing the etch resist patterns, plating resist patterns and solder masks. Specially formulated solvent inks are used for legend printing.

Artwork

Printed circuit board artwork will either be fine lines and intricate graphic features (pattern printing), floods with small squares or circles (solder mask printing) or fine text (legend printing). Because of the required pattern, solder mask and legend artwork is typically similar from one PCB application to another.

Printed circuit board screen frames are normally 90 x 80 cm or 85 x 65 cm, and are generally made of aluminum. Small frame sizes and increased frame strength allow mesh to be stretched to the high tension levels that PCB screen printing requires (for low off-contact printing, resulting in very tight registration tolerances).
Screen prepation

For optimum image results, it is recommended to stretch the mesh at an angle from 15 to 30 degrees (mesh is stretched in the clamps at 90 degrees, and the frames are angled under the mesh). Mesh is typically tensioned to 28 to 30 N/cm (0.970-0.910 mm), and should relax for 48-hours before exposure.
Screens are usually coated with solvent resistant emulsions that have a solids content of 30% or greater. For optimum image results, the target EOM for PCB screens is 10% – 30% of the mesh thickness. The Rz of the stencil should be less than 5 microns. Artwork is exposed by conventional exposure techniques, using films that are 0.18 mm thick and have a resolution of at least 6000 dpi.
It is common that screens used for PCB printing are reclaimed and used again; however, screens that have been reclaimed are used on jobs that are not critical.

Spring polyester mesh such as 120T/300-34Ymeshes provide easy, high-tension capabilities, along with very low elongation and minimal tension loss. These are desirable characteristics for PCB applications, which commonly have long print runs requiring image stability.
